A Real Moment of Bush Medicine Wisdom
One of our customers shared a story that captures how healing show up when you let nature and community work together:
“It was when I had only been in Jamaica for a couple of months. I had just moved from Negril to the hills of Clarendon, outside of Spaldings town, and I developed a bad stomach ache. I went to a doctor who prescribed medication, but it didn’t help the extreme pain I was in.
One day, I decided to go to a spot at the river we had found—really beautiful and usually empty. On the way there, I saw a stand with a medical cross and a sign that said “medicine.” Thinking it meant bush medicine, I pulled over. A man came out with only one leg, but a very cheerful disposition, and I asked him what kinds of bush medicines he had. When he looked confused, I immediately realized the mistake I had made.
I asked him if the “medicine” meant rum and weed, and he laughed and said yes—that’s the kind of medicine they had there. I went to leave, but he stopped me and asked what I was looking for medication for. When I explained my stomach problem, he said he actually did have something for it.
He made his way to the side of his yard and pulled a massive bundle of cerasee off the fence. He explained that I should boil it and drink up to two cups of the tea—but not more.
After a swim in the river, I went home and made the most bitter tea I’ve ever tasted in my life. But halfway through the first cup, my stomach pains began to ease. And by the end of the second cup, it was as if I had never had a week-long stomachache at all. A couple of farts later, and I was good as new.
It was an important lesson for me about Jamaica—to come to an understanding that I was in a place where a pirate on the side of the road could treat my illness more effectively than a registered family doctor.
Since then I’ve learned so much about bush medicine. I’ve had a little help from books and online sources, but I’ve learned more from talking to people than from anywhere else. I’ve met some really skilled medicine people, but I’ve also been in awe of the amount of knowledge that everyday people have about the healing plants of the island.
The medicinal knowledge is a really special layer of the ingenuity of Jamaican people. An incredible amount of skills and trades are passed on informally here. Even with a lack of access to formal education, so many people develop wide-ranging skill sets and a sharp instinct for creative problem-solving. Jamaican people can MacGyver anything. It’s really incredible.” – Michelle from Canada
